Telling Stories

Chapman’s fifth album, released in 2000, brings a more electric and band-oriented texture to her songwriting. Its songs are less built around the long narrative arc of “Fast Car,” instead using concise images and shifting arrangements to explore love, memory and social life. The title track and “Change” frame a set that sounds fuller while keeping Chapman’s voice and writing in the foreground.
