Van Halen built its sound around Eddie Van Halen's inventive guitar playing, Alex Van Halen's driving drums and a succession of vocalists who each reshaped the band's character. The original David Lee Roth lineup fused hard rock virtuosity with theatrical, party-ready songs; albums such as Van Halen, Fair Warning and 1984 move between raw guitar attack, dark grooves and pop-sized hooks. Sammy Hagar's arrival brought a more melodic, polished direction on 5150 and later records, while Gary Cherone fronted the distinct Van Halen III. The band reunited with Roth for A Different Kind of Truth, drawing on early demos as well as new performances. Across these changes, instrumental interplay and Eddie's guitar remained its defining center.
