The Weeknd

The Weeknd builds much of his music around a tension between inviting melody and uneasy emotional surroundings. Abel Tesfaye's flexible voice can make bright pop arrangements sound wounded, while darker R&B settings often carry an outward display of confidence. Kiss Land favors extended, heavy atmospheres; Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy place more immediate hooks inside a broader range of production styles. After Hours gives those contrasts a sustained breakup trajectory, and Dawn FM uses a radio-broadcast concept to connect its electronic pop songs. Ranking the albums means considering how structure changes their effect. A generous sequence of collaborations, a tightly managed emotional arc and a deliberately continuous listening world each place different demands on the voice and on the listener.
