The Strokes

The Strokes' albums begin with a compact guitar language whose apparent looseness depends on carefully fitted parts. Julian Casablancas' voice often adds distance or weariness to bright melodic movement, creating a tension that changes across the catalog. Is This It and Room on Fire offer closely related but differently shaded versions of that early identity. First Impressions of Earth expands the scale; Angles and Comedown Machine give electronic textures and altered vocal approaches more room. The New Abnormal sustains a more reflective mood through longer songs, while Reality Awaits makes processing and looser forms still more conspicuous. Ranking the records means weighing concentration against expansion, and deciding how each production setting serves the interaction between guitars, rhythm and an increasingly flexible vocal presence.
