Prince

Prince’s catalog moves among funk, rock, R&B, pop, psychedelia, jazz and electronic production, often shifting style from one release to the next. Early albums establish his multi-instrumental studio craft; the 1980s records expand into ambitious band arrangements and distinct concepts, while later work explores sprawling collections, instrumental experiments and returns to Minneapolis funk. His voice, guitar and rhythmic instincts connect otherwise contrasting albums. Ranking the catalog is interesting because the records vary in format as well as sound: some are focused studio statements, others archival or multi-disc sets. Listeners can compare experimentation, songwriting and how fully each album realizes its own musical world.
