Paul Young

Paul Young’s catalog centers on a soulful pop voice that moves between blue-eyed soul, polished 1980s pop, adult contemporary songwriting and later returns to classic soul. No Parlez established his expressive vocal style through a mixture of covers and carefully produced band arrangements; later records expanded toward original writing, country colors and reflective material. Several releases revisit songs by other artists, but the arrangements and vocal phrasing give each collection a different purpose. Comparing the albums is interesting because listeners can hear how the same voice works in both sleek pop settings and more roots-oriented or stripped-back performances, across changing production styles.
