New Order
11 studio albumsRock, Electronic / Dance
New Order built a distinctive identity by carrying post-punk’s tension into dance music. Their early records retain the shadow of Joy Division, but sequencers, drum machines and Peter Hook’s high, melodic bass soon became central to a brighter, more mobile sound. Across the catalog, guitar-led urgency alternates with club rhythms, from the structural experiments of the mid-1980s to later returns to direct rock and the polished electronics of Music Complete. The group’s changing lineups and long pauses make its discography unusually varied in tone. Ranking the albums means weighing atmosphere against momentum, and deciding when the band’s balance of songwriting and dance-floor motion feels most fully realized.
