Fiona Apple

Fiona Apple’s albums center on a distinctive piano voice and songwriting that turns close observation into sharply shaped, emotionally complicated songs. Across the catalogue, jazz-inflected piano and confessional writing give way to increasingly unconventional rhythms, leaner arrangements and a willingness to let performance sound spontaneous. Her records are separated by long intervals, but each marks a clear change in how voice, words and ensemble interact: from the intimate, carefully arranged early songs to the percussive, collective feel of her later work. Ranking them means deciding whether you value melodic immediacy, intricate arrangements, lyrical candor or the freedom of her most exploratory recordings.
