Deep Purple

Deep Purple’s album catalog follows a series of distinct band lineups and musical priorities, from late-sixties psychedelic and orchestral experiments to the heavy, organ-and-guitar attack that shaped its best-known early-seventies work. Later releases explore funk and blues, shift into polished eighties hard rock, then make room for longer improvisations and more contemporary production. The recurring contrast between Jon Lord’s keyboards and the guitarists’ changing approaches gives the records different kinds of tension, even when the rhythm section keeps a recognizable drive. Ranking the albums means comparing not only songs but eras: the focused studio craft of Machine Head, the changing textures of Fireball, and the later band’s continued appetite for new material.
