Arctic Monkeys began with wiry, fast indie rock built around Alex Turner’s sharply observed Sheffield characters, but their albums repeatedly change the frame around those songs. The first two records prize speed, clipped guitar interplay and conversational storytelling; Humbug brings a darker, more spacious weight, while Suck It and See favors open melodies. AM turns the group’s riffs toward nocturnal groove, then Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino shifts to piano-led lounge pop and a satirical, imagined setting. The Car extends that orchestral, slow-burn approach. Ranking the catalogue means deciding whether immediacy, rhythmic drive, atmosphere or carefully arranged vocal and string textures matters most.
